Genetic counselling

Understand the test before deciding whether to take it.

Genetic counselling is a structured discussion of why a test may or may not be appropriate, what the possible results can mean, what limitations apply and what decisions or family questions could follow.

Before and after testing

Before testing, counselling can cover

  • Why hereditary testing is being considered and the question it should answer.
  • The scope and limitations of the proposed test, including specimen and report considerations.
  • Possible result categories, including positive and negative results and variants of uncertain significance.
  • Possible implications for you and biological relatives.
  • Consent, privacy, your right to ask questions, and the chance of unexpected findings.

After testing, counselling can cover

  • What the report actually states and what it does not establish.
  • Whether a finding is considered clinically significant, uncertain or not explanatory.
  • Possible next steps, including discussion with your treating clinician.
  • Family communication and cascade testing, where the finding and professional advice support it.

A conversation, not a sales pitch

Counselling is delivered by the qualified professional responsible for the pathway and tailored to your clinical question. Choosing not to test is a valid outcome.
