Oncology second opinion

An additional perspective when the next decision needs clarity.

An oncology second opinion is a structured review of the diagnosis, available records and a defined clinical question. It may support the current approach, identify issues for further discussion or suggest that more information is needed.

What a second opinion can and cannot do

A second opinion adds perspective. It does not guarantee a different recommendation or an improved outcome, and the existing treating relationship should continue unless you and your clinicians agree otherwise.

What to prepare

  • Diagnosis, pathology and relevant imaging reports.
  • Current and prior treatment history, including known response or progression.
  • Molecular or biomarker reports, where available.
  • A short list of the questions you and your treating clinician want addressed.
  • Contact and authorisation details, and the approved method for transferring records.

What happens after you enquire

  1. Pathway check

The team checks whether a second opinion fits your question and current scope.

  2. Information

You may be asked for additional records or a clearer question.

  3. Scope and fees

Scope, process, fees and timing are confirmed before anything proceeds.

  4. Review

The clinician reviews the available information and discusses findings within the agreed consultation.

  5. Back to your team

Any change in treatment is discussed with your treating clinician in the context of the full record.

Common questions

Can I request a second opinion if I already have a treating oncologist?

Yes. A second opinion can be requested for additional perspective. The existing treating relationship should be maintained unless you and your clinicians agree on a change.

Should I send all my medical records?

Only share the information requested for the chosen service, through the approved secure process. Do not send sensitive records by general email or other unapproved channels.

Urgent medical needs
