High-risk infusion, observation & treatment support

Complex infusions require a planned setting.

Some prescribed therapies require extended observation, additional monitoring or a specialist-led administration protocol. Before such a service is confirmed, KPCIRC and the institution establish the treatment, clinical responsibility, staffing, equipment, emergency readiness and observation plan.

Potential support pathways, subject to site confirmation

  • Risk review before a planned infusion, including previous infusion reactions and other factors relevant to the prescribed medicine.
  • Protocol-directed premedication or other prescribed supportive measures for a specific treatment, where appropriate.
  • Longer observation after selected therapies when the approved protocol requires it.
  • Specialist-led desensitisation or other high-acuity administration, only where the specialist, trained team, emergency equipment, monitoring and approved procedure are in place.
  • High-risk observation, infusion-pump disconnection or flushing, and selected central-line, port, PICC or injection procedures where the site is equipped and authorised.

A high-risk session has an explicit plan

  1. Pre-clearance

Confirm indication, prescriber, regimen, allergies, previous reactions, current clinical factors and records.

  2. Written order and protocol

Confirm the exact medicine or measure, route, timing, premedication and observation plan.

  3. Readiness check

Confirm staff, monitoring, medicine handling, emergency response and escalation for the planned risk level.

  4. During treatment

Record protocol-required observations and follow the site’s process for suspected reactions or deterioration.

  5. Discharge and handoff

Document completion, any event, instructions and the follow-up plan; escalate unresolved concerns.

What this page does not promise

  • It does not imply that every KPCIRC location has high-acuity or desensitisation capability.
  • It does not recommend an infusion solely because a patient is described as “high risk”.
  • It does not replace specialist evaluation, a prescription, informed consent or the facility’s emergency procedures.
  • It does not describe any general infusion as cancer prevention.
