Pharmacogenomics · PGx Safe Start

Understand gene–medicine information in clinical context.

Pharmacogenomics considers whether selected genetic findings may be relevant to how a person responds to particular medicines. PGx Safe Start is limited to gene–medicine relationships supported by the applicable test, current evidence and service scope, and is kept distinct from hereditary cancer-risk assessment.

What the service may include

  • Review of an available pharmacogenomic report, or an approved testing pathway, according to the service configuration.
  • Explanation of relevant gene–medicine relationships and the evidence behind them.
  • Clear indication of which results are relevant, uncertain, not covered or not interpretable from the supplied test.
  • Questions for discussion with the prescribing clinician.

Do not change medicines on your own

Results must be considered alongside the indication, all current medicines, organ function, history and the prescriber’s assessment. Never make medicine or dose changes from a report alone.

What PGx Safe Start is not

  • It is not a universal panel that predicts the response to every medicine.
  • It does not override the medicine label, clinical guidelines, prescribing judgement or your current clinical status.
  • It does not establish that a medicine will be effective or free of side effects.
